Every kind of pool an Arizona backyard can hold

Play pools, spools, geometric and freeform shapes, and pool + spa combos. We design yours in 3D so you see it before we build it.

New pool types we build in the Phoenix Valley

Every Apex pool starts as a 3D concept you walk through and approve before we quote it. The best place to begin is picturing the shape that fits your lot and how your family will actually use the water: laps, a baja shelf for the kids, a spa for year-round. Here are the five we build most across the Valley. Already own a pool that's showing its age? That's a pool remodel or resurface, not a new build.

Play Pools

Shallow end to end

A play pool holds a flat 3.5-to-5-foot depth from wall to wall, so kids can stand up anywhere and adults can toss a volleyball without dropping off into a deep end. It is the most-requested layout for Valley families, and it warms faster and costs less to fill than a diving pool.

  • Uniform 3.5-5 ft depth
  • Baja shelf for chairs in the water
  • Sun-shelf bubbler
  • Bench seating along the wall
  • Volleyball and basketball anchors
  • Pebble interior in a light tone

Spools & Cocktail Pools

For tight lots and small yards

A spool splits the difference between a spa and a pool, usually 10 to 16 feet long, built for the narrow side yards and small lots where a full-size pool will not fit. Add swim jets and a heater and it works all year: a plunge on a 110° afternoon, a warm soak on a January night.

  • Fits lots a full pool can’t
  • Swim jets for exercise in place
  • Heater and chiller ready
  • Lower water and chemical costs
  • All-tile or pebble interior
  • Bench and Baja shelf seating

Geometric Pools

Straight lines, squared to the house

Right angles and a clean single edge that squares up to your block wall and the lines of the house. Geometric pools suit modern and transitional desert homes, make the most of a rectangular lot, and give you a natural lane for swimming laps.

  • Rectangular, L-shape or Roman end
  • Perimeter-overflow or infinity edge
  • Raised bond beam for spa or planters
  • Single clean band of waterline tile
  • Lap lane for exercise
  • Travertine or paver decking

Freeform Pools

Curves that follow the desert

Organic, curved shapes that follow the natural grade and planting of a Sonoran yard. A freeform pool reads softer, wraps around a ramada or a boulder outcrop, and lets us tuck the equipment behind desert landscaping instead of a straight fence line.

  • Curved, natural shape
  • Beach or zero-depth entry
  • Grotto, boulder and waterfall options
  • Wraps around trees and ramadas
  • Pebble interior in desert tones
  • Rock or pebble deck blending

Pool + Spa Combos

A hot soak and a cooling spill

A raised spa that spills into the pool: a hot soak in winter, a cooling waterfall all summer, both running off one equipment pad and one app. The spillover is the sound and movement most people picture when they imagine their backyard.

  • Raised spa with spillover
  • Shared equipment pad and automation
  • Fire feature alongside the spa
  • Reversible heat pump for heat or chill
  • Bench and jet seating
  • Warm the spa from your phone

Every pool starts as a design concept

You will not sign off a napkin sketch. Every Apex pool starts as a 3D design concept you can walk through, adjust and approve before we build. It is the clearest way to know exactly what you are getting - the shape, the decking, the water and fire features, the way it all sits against your house and the desert.

Renderings we show during design are concepts, not photos of finished pools. Apex is a new company and does not pass off other builders’ work as its own.

  1. 1

    We measure the yard

On the free in-home visit we measure the space, check access and grade, and talk through how you plan to use the pool.

  2. 2

    You walk it in 3D

We build your pool as a 3D concept - shape, decking, water and fire features, and how it sits against the house and the mountains. You move things around on screen.

  3. 3

    Approve the design first

Nothing is committed until you have signed off on the design. No pressure to move ahead on a pool you have not seen and shaped yourself.

Features you can build in

A pool is a set of choices. These are the ones that matter most in Arizona heat, dust and monsoon season. We walk every one of them during design so nothing is a surprise later.

Baja shelf
A shallow ledge, usually 9 to 12 inches deep, for lounge chairs, toddlers and a cool place to sit with your feet in the water.
Swim-up bar
Submerged stools and a bar top tied to a ramada or outdoor kitchen, so drinks and food stay poolside.
Water & fire features
Sheet-descent spillways, scuppers, bubblers and gas fire bowls that add sound, movement and light after dark.
In-floor cleaning
Pop-up heads built into the floor push debris toward the drain, so the pool keeps itself clean through dust and monsoon season.
Saltwater
A salt chlorine generator makes its own chlorine from a small amount of salt - softer-feeling water and far less chemical handling.
Automation
Run the pumps, heat, lights and features from your phone. Warm the spa before you leave work, set a schedule, and forget it.
Chillers
A reversible heat pump or dedicated chiller drops the water 10 to 15° in July, so the pool actually refreshes instead of sitting at bath temperature.
